J Hom et al recently published a study in the Annals of Emergency Medicine examining the evidence that excessive IV fluids administered in the ER are a cause of cerebral edema, which is the leading cause of death for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis. The authors searched the literature (including observational studies) to compile an evidence-based medicine review of these occurances. Three studies were included. In the end, the authors found little support for a strong association between cerebral edema and IV fluid use.
